PEAK PERFORMANCE Timanfaya Breaks Visitor Record Number

Lanzarote’s emblematic and most popular tourist attraction, the Timanfaya National Park, clocked up its highest number of visitors this decade last year, as a total of 1,655,772 tourists trooped through the lava fields to marvel at this natural wonder.

Admissions to Timanfaya during 2015 were at their highest since the onset of the crisis back in 2007. But are still some way off their peak, as between 1999 and 2007 visitor numbers never fell below 1.7 million, reaching their high water mark in 2003, when 1.84 million sightseers toured the region.

The rise in admissions last year can largely be attributed to the ongoing increase in the number of tourists visiting Lanzarote, asforeign passenger arrivals climbed yet again last month, by 9%.

The figures also reveal that Timanfaya is the second most popular National Park in the Canary Islands, trailing behind Tenerife’s iconic Teide volcano park, which welcomed 3,289,444 visitors last year. But still well ahead of Garajonay on La Gomera (828,758 admissions) and the Caldera du Taburiente National Park on La Palma (445,084 admissions).
